General Advice

  • Ensure that your car is regularly serviced and well maintained.

Things to Keep in the Car

  • Contact details for your motoring breakdown assistance organisation, e.g. The RAC, if you are a member.
  • A torch.
  • Some change or a 'phone card, if you don't have a mobile 'phone.
  • Paper and pencil.
  • Warning triangle.
  • Fluorescent or reflective armband(s), jacket or other item of clothing.
  • Fire extinguisher approved for motoring use.

Setting Out on Long, Winter Journeys

In addition to the above, you should think about taking :

  • A mat or sack to help tyres get extra grip if stuck in snow.
  • A shovel.
  • Warm clothing, including gloves.
  • Wellingtons or other waterproof boots.
  • Screen de-icer.
